Lance Stewart

Attorney

Before getting his license, Lance spent close to five years working to defend the rights of the incarcerated, and those accused of a crime, at the non-profit Southern Center for Human Rights, in Atlanta, Georgia.  Lance’s work investigating corrupt practices played a critical role in class action impact litigation aimed at protecting the rights of those accused of a crime, which in turn led to statewide reforms of Georgia’s public defense system.

Lance was drawn to the emphasis on public interest and practical experience at Northeastern University School of Law, in Boston, Massachusetts.  While there, Lance excelled in his courses, and had the privilege of working for the chief justice of a state supreme court, a state senator, a nationally recognized public defense office, and a small private firm.  Under the close tutelage of respected professors, Lance co-authored a certiorari petition on behalf of a capital defendant in North Carolina, and tried the case of a man facing misdemeanor charges in Sussex County, obtaining an acquittal.

While clerking for a public defense office in San Bernardino County, Lance obtained another acquittal for a client.  After obtaining his California license, he went on to spend the next five years working on behalf of people injured by exposure to asbestos, often working with people facing terminal illnesses, and with families who had lost loved ones.  As his experience progressed, Lance routinely prevailed on dispositive motions, prepared several cases for trial, and oversaw and trained a team of attorneys handling a firm’s most valued California cases.  He second-chaired two complex asbestos trials, assisting in the resolution of one case for more than $2 million following jury selection, and taking the other to verdict.  In addition, Lance has taken four personal injury cases to verdict, obtaining a verdict for his client in each of them.
